LUXEMBOURG–(DWPR)–ispace EUROPE S.A. (ispace-EUROPE), the Luxembourg-based subsidiary of ispace, inc., and the Italian Space Agency (ASI) have announced a payload services agreement to transport a Laser Retroreflector Array (LaRA2) to the Moon. This collaboration marks the first full-scale contract between ispace-EUROPE and ASI, paving the way for joint future lunar developments.
LaRA2 is a compact, robust, and lightweight instrument designed to operate without a power source and withstand the harsh conditions of the lunar surface. Equipped with precise retroreflectors, it reflects laser beams directly back to their source, enabling accurate position measurements. Similar technology is currently operational on NASA’s Perseverance rover on Mars.
“This collaboration with the Italian Space Agency is a testament to the vital role commercial companies play in advancing lunar science. Adding LaRA2 to existing retroreflectors on the Moon will enhance surface mapping and refine navigation capabilities for future missions,” said Julien Lamamy, CEO of ispace-EUROPE.
The LaRA2 technology will be integrated into the APEX 1.0 lunar lander, part of ispace-U.S. Mission 3, scheduled to land in the Schrödinger Basin on the far side of the Moon in 2026. Following touchdown, ASI will facilitate long-term laser ranging observations using lunar orbiters to gather valuable data for mapping and navigation.
ispace’s global operations span Japan, the U.S., and Luxembourg, enabling the concurrent development of missions. Mission 2, featuring the RESILIENCE lander and TENACIOUS micro rover, is led by ispace Japan and is scheduled for launch in mid-January 2025. Mission 3, debuting the APEX 1.0 lunar lander, is expected in 2026, while Mission 6, utilizing the Series 3 lander, is planned for 2027.
