Post Truth, the first feature-length documentary entirely generated using artificial intelligence, has secured a wide theatrical release—becoming the first AI film in history to reach cinemas.
ISTANBUL–(DWPR)–Distributed by Başka Sinema, Turkey’s leading distributor for independent cinema, the English-language film will open this summer across more than 20 cities. First reported by Deadline, the release marks a landmark moment in the evolution of filmmaking. Created by pioneering generative AI artist Alkan Avcıoğlu, the film is already generating strong international interest from festivals and distributors, sparking discussions about the future of cinema.
Described as “a fake film about the real world,” Post Truth explores our relationship with technology and how we arrived at a cultural moment where truth and reality no longer matter. The film reflects an era of information overload and dissonance, using the very language of the digital age to tell its story.
“We live in an era where everything feels staged and unreal—from politics to social media,” said Alkan Avcıoğlu, director of the film. “Post Truth questions the very foundations of reality and the narratives we choose to believe in.”
Avcıoğlu spent over a decade in the film industry before transitioning into AI-powered visual storytelling. His works, which often question photographic truth, have been showcased at global art fairs like Paris Photo, Art Basel Miami, Zona Maco, and Vogue Photo. He has also exhibited at galleries worldwide and been auctioned by Christie’s New York.
Co-written and co-produced with multidisciplinary artist Vikki Bardot, the script of Post Truth draws inspiration from filmmakers like Godfrey Reggio, Adam Curtis, and Chris Marker. Developed over 15 months, the project used over 55 hours of AI-generated content—more than 200,000 seconds of synthetic visuals and sound. Every aspect of the film—visuals, audio, voice, and music—was created using artificial intelligence, based on Avcıoğlu’s conceptual and aesthetic framework.
“Post Truth marks a new frontier for filmmaking—not just in how films are made, but in how reality is represented on screen,” said Vikki Bardot, who co-produced the film via Spongeworthy Studio. “Storytelling today must adopt the visual language of a world where the real and fake have already merged.”
Armağan Lale, Director of Başka Sinema, added, “We believe it’s important to acknowledge and understand how new tools like AI are expanding the language of cinema in real time.” The company is preparing for international distribution discussions at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
